Case Study: Maryland Court Excels at Resolving Conflicts Outside of Court

The state District Court of Maryland was honored recently for its outstanding efforts in alternative dispute resolution. ADR as defined by the Court is "the process of resolving matters before the Court, through means other than litigation."

Community Mediation Maryland, an organization striving to make every Maryland citizen aware of affordable, high quality community mediation services, has honored the Maryland Court. The Court's conflict resolution efforts involve an ADR office that works collaboratively through partnerships with community mediation centers in the state.

"By reaching out into our communities, these community mediation centers help neighbors right in their own neighborhoods," explains Chief Judge Ben C. Clyburn of the District Court of Maryland. "Whenever it is possible, resolving conflict outside of court helps everyone, and it is an essential part of the Judiciary's mission."
